There once was an old woman who lived alone in a shack far, far away from everything.
Now it may seem like she had a terrible life, out there all by her lonesome. But nope. She found joy in doing her hair everyday. It was the light of her life. She would wake up, go to a tiny mirror on the wall, and do her hair. And as every girl knows, that makes you ready to take on another day.
One fine day she woke up, went to the mirror, and saw she only had three hairs left on her wrinkly little head.
She stared at her reflection for a minute and said, “Hmmm…… I think I’ll braid my hair today! So she did and you know what? She had an awesome day.
The next morning, when she checked herself in the mirror, she discovered she only had two hairs on her head.
“Well,” she thought, “I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today!” So she did and she had a fantastic day.
The following day she woke up, visited her mirror, and saw that there was only one scraggly hair left on that head of hers.
“It looks like I’ll put my hair in a ponytail today!” She did, and - you guessed it - she had yet another spectacular day.
The next day she woke up, and of course, hurried to the mirror. She gasped.
There were no hairs left on her head.
None.
It was all gone.
The head looked like a potato.
“WOO HOO!” she cried, “I DON’T HAVE TO DO MY HAIR TODAY!!!”
So she didn’t. And she had the absolute best day.
I don’t know who this woman is, but I adore her. Actually, this woman isn’t real and I just heard this story when I was young. But she has stayed with me all these years, and I won’t let her go. Because to me, the magic of this story is that this woman really does exist.
She’s in you. She’s in me. She’s in that guy over there.
This happy old lady decided that nothing was going to get in her way of making every day the best day. She wouldn’t let the worst of circumstances ruin her day. I believe that this kind of attitude exists in every single person on this good earth. Yeah, I said it. Even the Grinch before his heart got swoll. Even he had it.
Every day consists of 1,440 minutes. Let’s say you have a bad few minutes...maybe that jerk pulled into your parking spot. Maybe you tripped while crossing the street. Maybe Netflix ate your homework last night.
Whatever it is, don’t let it ruin the rest of the 1,435 minutes of the day! I’m serious! Think of that little old lady, whose favorite thing was to do her hair. Think of how devastated she could have been when she saw it was all gone. But she decided to look on the bright side of things (probably super bright with the sun reflecting off of her shiny bald head). Now, she knows how to live!
We all have a bit of her in us, we just have to let that optimism shine through. Try it today. I mean it. TODAY. Scream “WOO HOO” about something. It doesn’t have to be big, but trust me, it’ll make the day a little better. Or a whole lot better.
